Sikkim has kept alive the centuries old styles and forms of Thangka painting and the art plays a vital role by adding more charm and beauty to it’s rich culture and heritage.
DAY 1: Bagdogra- Martam Village (132kms/3-4hrs). After arrival, unwind and relax. Overnight stay.
DAY 2: Martam Village- Rumtek- Gangtok- Martam Village (32kms/ 1 hour drive one way)(OPTIONAL). After breakfast, visit the Rumtek monastery located in one of the attractive lower valleys with fluttering prayer flags, the monastery is the headquarters of the ‘Kagyu’ (Black hat) order of Tibetan Lamaistic Buddhism. Thereafter, drive to Gangtok. Visit the unique Namgyal Institute of Tibetology established in 1958 to promote research into Tibet and Mahayana Buddhism. The library maintains a large and important Buddhist collection with many fine Thangkas, icons and art treasure on display. Drop in to the Government Institute of Cottage Industriey that produces a wide range of local handicrafts. Walk around the busy hub of MG marg, a 15 minute pleasant walk from end to end. Return to Martam Village for a relaxed evening. Overnight stay.
DAY 3: Martam Village.Today after breakfast , visit Orchid Nursery . You will be given a guided tour on orchid farming. In the afternoon you could go for a short village walk. Enjoy a relaxed evening. Overnight stay.
DAY 4: Rumtek – Kewzing. (85kms/4hrs). After breakfast, drive to Kewzing. On the way, visit Temi Tea garden, the only tea estate existing in Sikkim growing orthodox special tea. After the tea tour in Temi Tea Garden, continue your journey to Kewzing. After reaching, unwind and relax.
DAY 5: Kewzing. Today after breakfast, visit the Bon Monastery where you will be given a guided tour on the art of Thangka painting and its legacy. After lunch, take a short village walk, where one can interact with the locals over a cup of tea. Enjoy a relaxed evening. Overnight stay.
DAY 6: Kewzing- Rinchenpong (40kms/4hrs). After breakfast, leave for Rinchengpong. On the way visit Pemayangtse monastery. Comprising of numerous Thankgkas and wall paintings, the old stone and wood buildings of the Pemayangtse monastery is also known for its charming and spectacular views. It was built during the reign of the third Chogyal Chador Namgyal in 1705. Lunch on arrival at Rinchenpong. After lunch, take a walk to the ruins of the former capital of Rabdantse dating from 17th century guided by Mr. Thendup Tashi (The owner of Yangsum Farm)
DAY 7: Rinchenpong. Visit the local school after breakfast and in the evening learn how to make a local Sikkimese dish from the lady of the house.
DAY 8: Rinchenpong- Bagdogra.(127kms/4-5hrs )
After breakfast, drive to Bagdogra Airport for your return journey.
